Dutch Healthcare Explained

The Dutch healthcare system is based on mandatory health insurance and provides access to high-quality medical care for everyone living or working in the Netherlands. All residents are required to take out a basic health insurance policy (basisverzekering), which covers essential healthcare services such as visits to a general practitioner (GP), hospital care, specialist treatment, and prescription medication.

In the Netherlands, the GP (huisarts) is the first point of contact for most health concerns and acts as a gatekeeper to specialist care. Patients usually need a referral from their GP before seeing a specialist or receiving hospital treatment. Health insurers must accept all applicants for the basic insurance package, regardless of age or medical history.

This system helps ensure that healthcare remains accessible, affordable, and of high quality for all residents.
